99 Out of 100 AI Queries Return No Brand Mention

We analyzed 5,562 AI-generated responses across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. The result: brands are almost never cited by AI systems — even when they are the direct answer to the question being asked.

Key Findings

Finding 1 — The citation gap is near-total. Across 5,562 AI queries run against 10 tracked brands, AI systems returned a brand mention in just 54 cases — a 1% citation rate. The remaining 99% of responses named competitor brands, general tools, or no specific brand at all.
Finding 2 — Most brands receive zero citations. 7 out of 10 tracked brands received zero AI citations across the entire observation period. This is not a tail-of-distribution outlier — it reflects the default state for brands that have not actively optimized for AI citation.
Finding 3 — AI citation is winner-take-most. The 54 citations recorded were heavily concentrated in a small number of brands. This mirrors what SEO looked like in 2004 — a narrow window before consolidation, where early movers captured authority that compounded over time.
Finding 4 — Google ranking does not predict AI citation. Several tracked brands with strong organic search rankings for relevant terms received zero AI citations. Ranking in Google and being cited by AI are separate outcomes driven by different signals.

What Determines AI Citation

Based on analysis of which brands did receive citations and the content structure of those brands, four factors consistently differentiated cited brands from invisible ones:

1. Definitive, extractable content

Pages that directly answer specific questions — with clear definitions, structured FAQ sections, and explicit factual claims — are significantly more likely to be extracted and cited. AI models look for “the best answer,” not “the page that ranks #1.”

2. Entity-level brand clarity

AI systems cite brands they have clear semantic associations for. Consistent JSON-LD structured data, canonical URLs, clear H1 hierarchies, and named entity disambiguation across authoritative sources signal a known, trustworthy entity.

3. AI bot crawl access

GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot must be able to read your content. A significant share of brands in our sample blocked one or more AI crawlers via robots.txt or WAF rules, effectively removing themselves from consideration.

4. Original, citable data

Brands that published proprietary research, unique statistics, or original claims were disproportionately cited. AI systems treat original data as higher-quality evidence than summarized or derivative content — and cite it accordingly.

Industry Context

The urgency of this data becomes clearer when placed alongside broader AI adoption trends. AI-powered search is not a future event — it is the current state of how a large and growing share of buyers research decisions.

The 2004 SEO parallel: In 2004, most brands were not thinking seriously about Google SEO. By 2010, the window to establish early authority had largely closed for competitive terms. AI citation follows the same dynamic — the brands building AEO infrastructure now are the ones that will dominate AI search results in 2027 and beyond.

Methodology

Data collection period: March 2026 – May 2026

Queries analyzed: 5,562 AI-generated responses

Brands tracked: 10 companies across multiple industries

AI platforms: ChatGPT (GPT-4o), Google Gemini Pro, Perplexity

Query selection: Industry-relevant informational and commercial-intent queries generated via the VibecodeAEO mention scan engine and submitted independently to each AI platform.

Citation definition: A brand mention was counted when the AI response explicitly named or recommended the brand as a tool, resource, or solution — not incidental name-drops in passing comparisons.

Limitations: This dataset reflects a specific set of tracked brands and query categories. Citation rates vary by industry, brand authority, and content quality. Results represent current AI citation patterns and should be expected to evolve as AI training data is updated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out if my brand is being cited by AI?

The most direct method is an AI Mention Scanner — systematically submitting relevant queries to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and recording whether your brand appears in responses. VibecodeAEO automates this and tracks mention rates over time.

What is a good AI citation rate?

Based on our current dataset, the median brand citation rate is effectively zero. Brands in the top decile achieve 5–15% citation rates for their target queries. Anything above 20% for a competitive category is strong performance and typically reflects a sustained AEO content strategy.

Can I improve my AI citation rate?

Yes, and results appear faster than traditional SEO. The primary levers are: ensuring AI crawlers can access your content, adding structured FAQ and definition content to key pages, publishing original research or proprietary data, and ensuring your brand entity is clearly defined via JSON-LD schema. Most brands see measurable improvement within 60–90 days of focused AEO work.

How often is this data updated?

We update aggregate benchmark data quarterly as we accumulate more scan data. Check back at this page or subscribe to our newsletter for the latest numbers.
