Answer engines differ from search engines in three ways: they synthesize multiple sources into a single response, they cite (or omit) sources at their own discretion, and they personalize answers based on conversation context. Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews show citations inline; ChatGPT and Claude often paraphrase without naming sources unless prompted.

Each engine ranks differently. ChatGPT weighs Wikipedia, Reddit, and well-cited media heavily. Perplexity leans on structured data and recency. Gemini favors content surfaced in Google's knowledge graph. AEO strategy starts with measuring per-engine visibility, not assuming uniform behavior.
