Open Graph (OG)

A meta-tag protocol that controls how a URL is rendered when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, etc. AI engines also read OG tags to extract page titles, descriptions, and preview images.

Add og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:type to every page. AI engines use these as a fallback when other meta is missing. Test with Facebook Sharing Debugger or OpenGraph.xyz.

Real-world example

A blog post has a generic title tag but a compelling og:title and og:description. When Perplexity fetches the page, it reads the OG tags first and uses the more descriptive version in its citation — giving the brand a better representation in the answer than the raw title tag would have provided.

Frequently asked questions

Which Open Graph tags are most important?+
og:title, og:description, og:image, og:type, and og:url are the core four. For articles, also add og:article:published_time and og:article:author. These are read by social platforms, AI engines, and link-preview generators — pages with complete OG tags get represented more accurately across all surfaces.
